“Walk the talk” is het principe. Einstein zei treffend: “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means.”
Last week I joined the Flanders Technology Tour by Nexxworks: three dense days of ports, hospitals, airports, startups and a bus full of people who never stopped exchanging ideas.
We started with a Polestar pickup at dawn, glided over the Scheldt on a boat tour of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, stared at robot-assisted surgery in Ghent, and fries (of course) at Agristo.
What made it unforgettable wasn’t just the itinerary; it was the people. Even a 1.5‑hour bus ride from Boom to Zaventem turned into a seminar on wheels where learning did not pause.
The red thread across the tour: Innovation = invention + implementation.
Ideas are abundant; doing is scarce.
The best places we visited are building safe harbours for experimentation, investing in adoption, and collaborating across ecosystems.
Because the cost of doing things is going down, while the cost of doing nothing keeps going up.
“The cost of doing things is going down, while the cost of doing nothing keeps going up” — Peter Hinssen
Day 1 – Antwerp: From digital harbours to human connection
“We live in a world of seismic shocks and undercurrents. Change isn’t a luxury anymore, it’s a necessity.” — Tom Braekeleirs
“Talk the Walk… share your learnings generously, open your parachute, immerse yourself in different realities, and learn.” — Francoise Chombar
“The worst thing you can say is: we tried it once, it didn’t work.” — Erwin Verstraelen
“Time is finite — but energy is expandable.” and “Success isn’t about doing more. It’s about being more.” — Robin Decottignies, Golazo Energy
My take on the day
Antwerp reminded me that implementation beats intention.
The port teams push proof of value, not just POCs;
ZAS frees up capacity to innovate continuously;
Byteflies connects the dots across care settings.
If you want impact, create safe havens for experimentation and kill the innovation killers in your head.
Day 2 – Brussels: Ecosystems, AI… and a concert hall that “gives a f*ck”
We kicked off with AI at Mediahuis(their newsroom and concrete use cases), walked into Tomorrowland’s Lab of Tomorrow where entertainment meets deep tech, then went airside at Brussels Airport to see the choreography of people, sensors and systems. We ended on the rooftop at Ancienne Belgique (AB)—a cultural engine that really does give a f*ck about values, inclusion and sustainability.
Mediahuis is scaling AI with scenario thinking, a full‑time POC team, and AI literacy for 5,000 employees—because scaling four steaks is easy; doing a thousand is a different operating model. (Great metaphor; painful truth.)
What we heard
Lab of Tomorrow: startups like Inku (on‑brand AI visuals) and Aerora (drone light shows) embody the value of community and connection over shiny tools.
Brussels Airport: data as an orchestrator using Jetpack.ai, plus a tender‑evaluation tool that speeds up the processes.
AB’s values—in their own unapologetic words: “We give a f*ck… we act on our ideals, take responsibility, break barriers, inspire others.” And they listen, include, and collaborate. That culture is a platform.
“Hope is the dogged determination to do what is in our power to create a better future even when facing bleak challenges and adversity.” — Jane Goodall
My take on the day
AI is constantly in beta and the biggest leadership challenge of our time.
If adoption is an afterthought, you’re just feeding the POC graveyard.
Plan to spend 50–70% extra on adoption—change, training, risk management—or don’t start.
Also: as AI use rises, so do misinformation & manipulation risks, while critical thinking and social skills can decline.
You need literacy + architecture (bottom‑up + top‑down)
Day 3 – Ghent: Precision, potatoes and the productivity paradox
Ghent is heritage fused with momentum. Orsi Academy was a mind‑blow: robotics augmenting human skill.
“Competency is not that far up the learning curve! But Proficiency is!” — Orsi training insight
At Agristo, I learned that no AI agent can say “potato” with the passion of Kristof Wallays. And yes, FRIETJEEES.
We finished at Wintercircus: startups, Matthias Geeroms, Miles Ahead (Luc Burgelman)… and a keynote by Peter Hinssen that tied the threads together.
“It is not a storm—it is the climate.” — Peter Hinssen
(Get every potato into the bag where it yields the most value.)
My take on the day
Scale-up truths from the Wintercircus ecosystem
Non‑founder sales is the tipping point.
When restructuring, cut deep—once.
Send your best people abroad to grow.
Build a drumbeat (cadence) and a recipe for growth toward Series A.
Culture = good leadership: do what you say, hire right, simplify, don’t over‑regulate.
Timing, team, model, and funding—all matter, but vision + values sit on top.
We’re beyond tools: we’re deep in the productivity paradox. Europe risks talking innovation while others ship. If we want to lead, we must remove barriers, fund implementation, and push adoption.
Concluding
Four points that won’t leave me:
Innovation = invention + implementation. Most failures are in the second part. Budget, plan, and manage adoption (people, process, risk) upfront.
Ecosystems beat egos. Build safe harbours for experimentation and diversity. Pay it forward; collaborate to innovate & implement.
Entrepreneurship needs a compass (vision & values), a great team, and time & timing. Execution wins.
Leadership over management. Inspire, build resilience, stay agile, anticipate. And Talk the Walk: tell the honest story, both success and failure.
The cost of doing keeps going down; the cost of not doing keeps climbing. If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, you’ll miss it. Start, learn, adapt. Then tell the story so others can start, too.

Innovation, Inspiration & Incredible Connections — My 3‑day Flanders Technology Tour
From a boat tour through a “digital harbour” to robot‑assisted surgery and a smart potato factory (FRIETJEEES!), these three days proved that Flanders doesn’t just talk about innovation, it implements it.
My four takeaways:
Innovation = invention + implementation.
Ecosystems beat egos.
Entrepreneurship needs vision, values, team & timing.
Leaders inspire, build resilience, stay agile, and anticipate.
After an amazing journey as CIO at ECS, today was my last day in this role. It has been a pleasure to lead the IT team and support the business on its digital transformation journey.
Digital and IT technologies are key drivers for ECS, and I’m confident the future is bright with such a strong IT team. The foundation is solid for turning future challenges into success.
Looking back, I’m proud of what we achieved together:
SASE implementation
Haulier Portal launch
Laptop roll-out
Modern data platform
But what I value most are the people, the teamwork, and the personal growth we shared. Thank you to everyone who made this journey so rewarding!
As I often say: change = chance.
Every change brings new opportunities.
I’ll be exploring new ventures in the coming weeks and months—still early days, but I’m excited to see where it leads. I’ll share updates (and lessons learned) here on LinkedIn and on my website.
I understand that chances and opportunities are not plentiful for everyone, so I’m paying forward the generosity I’ve received: The farewell gifts are being reshared with children at vzw manege Dennenhof, who will soon enjoy a new eco-friendly refrigerator to keep their drinks and sandwiches cool after school.
Thank you for everything. And here’s to new beginnings!
💡 Zelfstandig of ondernemer
IT, leiderschap & management zijn mijn ding. Mijn passie.
I got the opportunity to have a personal chat with Stefaan Vandist about the power of a good story while we were waiting for the rain to stop.
During the keynote about innovation, creativity and sustainability there were 4 key messages: 1️⃣ Find stakeholders willing to make a difference. Sometimes, they’re not the first ones you think of. Be creative in forming coalitions. 2️⃣ Dream big: Instead of worrying about what might not work, imagine how awesome it would be if it does. 3️⃣ Make solutions tangible quickly: Prototype, fail fast, fail often, but always fail forward. Learn from each experience. 4️⃣ Celebrate success, no matter how small.
But what resonated most was the power of storytelling: It can immerse people in a dream, make them believe in the possible, and inspire action among those willing to make a difference.
Proj3ctS enables Ambits to scale with a future-proof, low-code solution that halves administrative costs and enhances user experience.
Ambits, a fast-growing Belgian startup specializing in leadership mentoring, faced a significant challenge: a manual, inefficient back-office process that hindered scalability and transparency. To support their growth ambitions, Ambits turned to Proj3ctS for a tailored digital transformation.
The Challenge
Ambits connects executives and management teams with experienced mentors through structured six-month programs. With a growing client base, the administrative burden of managing mentor-mentee journeys became unsustainable. Initially handled via Excel by a single student worker, the process was inaccessible, error-prone, and lacked scalability. A later switch to off-the-shelf mentoring software proved too rigid, unintuitive, and disconnected from Ambits’ existing tools.
The Solution
Proj3ctS stepped in to lead the transformation. Leveraging its expertise in digital strategy, architecture, and project management, Proj3ctS designed a scalable solution built on the Microsoft Power Platform. The new application was developed using low-code technology, ensuring rapid deployment and seamless integration with existing tools like Jotform and Outlook.
Proj3ctS coordinated the entire project lifecycle: from high-level architecture to stakeholder alignment to ensure that the final product met Ambits’ unique operational needs.
Key Features & Results
Automated Communication: All forms and emails are now automatically routed to the right stakeholders, eliminating manual follow-ups.
Centralized Data Access: Key users have real-time access to relevant data based on their roles, improving transparency and collaboration.
Integrated Time Tracking: Mentors can now log their hours directly in the platform, offering valuable insights into program efficiency.
User-Friendly Interface: Designed with simplicity in mind, the platform ensures a frictionless experience for both internal teams and external mentors.
Cost Efficiency: Administrative costs have been reduced by 50%, freeing up resources for strategic growth.
A Scalable Foundation for Growth
The application went live in May 2023, just six months after project kickoff. Since then, many mentoring projects have been successfully migrated to the new platform. The solution is fully scalable, allowing Ambits to onboard new users without significant increases in licensing costs.
“Proj3ctS quickly understood our complex workflows and translated them into a powerful, intuitive tool. The result is a back-office that supports our operations instead of slowing them down,” says Gerrit Sarens, CEO of Ambits. “We now have a clear, real-time view of our mentoring programs, which is essential for our continued growth.”
Looking Ahead
Ambits is now operating with a robust digital backbone that supports its mission: delivering impactful mentoring experiences. With all essential features in place, the organization is ready to explore future enhancements and “nice-to-haves” that will further elevate the user experience.
“Together with Proj3ctS, we’ve built a solution that aligns with the four pillars of successful digital change: people, process, technology, and data,” says Dries Vandevyvere of Proj3ctS. “Delivered on time and within budget, this project empowers Ambits to focus on what truly matters—growth and meaningful mentorship.”
The organization faced significant challenges in its IT department, including leadership challenges, lack of ownership, unclear vision, and excessive governance structures. These issues hindered our ability to innovate and respond to market demands effectively.
Key Project Areas
The transformation of the IT organization focused on several critical areas.
First, we aimed to balance demand and supply, ensuring that our IT resources were allocated efficiently to meet the needs of the business. We also undertook a comprehensive organization design, restructuring the IT department to improve efficiency and accountability. Clearly defining roles and responsibilities was another key area, as it helped enhance ownership and performance within the team.
We established clear levels in the Target Operating Model (TOM) to streamline operations and simplify the application landscape for better integration and usability. Improving vendor and contract management processes, along with executing effective service management, were also essential components of the project. Implementing stringent budget control measures ensured financial discipline, while enhancing visibility and transparency across all IT processes helped build trust and accountability.
Balancing the run and build aspects of IT was crucial for continuous improvement, and optimizing the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) led to better project outcomes. Strengthening project management practices ensured that projects were delivered on time and within budget.
Project success
The transformation project resulted in a new and future-proof IT organization that is easier to manage and more responsive to business needs.
We achieved better control over our budget, reduced third-party risks, and streamlined IT processes.
The application landscape is now more manageable, and the IT services are more reliable and efficient.
